PETROLEUM QUALITY INSTITUTE OF AMERICA TEST PROGRAM

The Petroleum Quality Institute of America (PQIA) is an independent resource for information and insights on the quality of lubricants in the marketplace. Our mission is to serve the consumer of lubricants by randomly sampling and independently testing lubricants taken from the field. Test results are posted along with the brand names on the PQIA website. This webpage provides an analysis on the brand detailed below.

The following are the test results for the sample examined.

Test Results and Assessment:

Although the label on the bottle says “Recommended for Pre-1988 Gasoline and Diesel Engine Requiring SB/CB Motor oil," it should be noted that the API Service Category listed on the product label (API SB/CB) is OBSOLETE and is not suitable for use in most gasoline-powered automotive engines built after 1951. Use in more modern engines may cause unsatisfactory performance or equipment harm. In addition, the labels do not properly state the viscosity grade, which should read "SAE 20W-50".

Note: Black Knight 20-50 was ordered off the shelves by the State in Alabama and Georgia. Other grades of Black Knight were ordered off the shelves by the State in New Jersey and Missouri.

Note: Although laboratory tests alone cannot be used to establish if engine oil meets an API Service Category, they can be used to determine if it doesn't.
