Automatic Transmission Fluid

PETROLEUM QUALITY INSTITUTE OF AMERICA TEST PROGRAM

The Petroleum Quality Institute of America (PQIA) is an independent resource for information and insights on the quality of lubricants in the marketplace. Our mission is to serve the consumer of lubricants by randomly sampling and independently testing lubricants taken from the field. Test results are posted along with the brand names on the PQIA website. This webpage provides an analysis on the brand detailed below.

The following are the test results for the sample examined.

Everclear
Automatic Transmission Fluid

Test Results and Assessment:

Whereas this product is labeled as "Useful in a variety of automatic transmissions," the results of the tests conducted on this sample show a product that DOES NOT meet any recognized specification of Automatic Transmission Fluid.

The Brookfield Viscosity is 238% higher than the maximum viscosity specification for a Dexron® III and Mercon® fluid. Also, the Viscosity at 100⁰C is 20% lower than the minimum specified for a Dexron® III and Mercon® fluid. In addition, the Flash Point is lower than required for Dexron® III and Mercon® fluids. Furthermore, the organometallic additive levels in this sample indicate the product may be contaminated with used oil and abrasive material. Use of this product in modern automatic transmissions will likely cause harm.

This is the eleventh time PQIA has issued Consumer Alerts on lubricants marketed under the Everclear brand. This product has been ordered off the shelves in the states of Georgia and North Carolina.

Note: Although the laboratory tests conducted cannot alone be used to establish if an Automatic Transmission Fluid meets all of its labeled specifications, they can be used to determine if it doesn't.
